The pictures below are just examples. With a composite headgasket, the o-ring would press into the metal rings on the headgasket. If using a copper headgasket, the block would be o-ringed and the head would have a receiving groove cut into it since the metal o-ring on the block would push the copper headgasket upwards.

Two of the ways to o ring the block is a stainless steel or piano wire is used.A receiver groove is machined in to the block say .030 and wire (.040) is pressed into the groove. A receiver groove is machined in to the head and the wire protruding from the block forces the copper head gasket in to the reciever groove making a mechanical seal.

I had my block O-ringed with receiver grooves in the heads and am planning on running a copper head gasket, .070 thick. Question is what bore diameter do I need for the head gasket, block bore is a 4.50 with A460 heads. Not sure if the O-ring wire makes a difference or not. Thanks! Chris

Doug if the wire is still in the block, then go with the soft copper, you definately can't use MLS gaskets with O'ring wire installed. You will have to use .040 TK min gasket thickness, preferably .060. It's better if you have reciever grooves in the heads …

Yes, you can put the o-ring in the block and use copper head gaskets without receiver grooves in the head, but it will hold more with recieving grooves. This means changing over from a composite or MLS head gasket to a copper head gasket is not a drop-in affair. O-rings in the block, no reveiver groove and anything but a copper head gasket is wrong and asking for trouble. The rings stop the head from seating fully on the block. O-ring wire is typically .045-.060" thick meaning you've got the head sitting .022-.030" higher than it needs to be.

If you run the o rings, typically you would have .008 to .012 o ring protrusion from the head and run a .040" or thicker copper head gasket. All sorts of different sealers can be used, I prefer a thin smear of ultra copper silicone around all the water jackets, just to seal any possible coolant leaks.

2300 Ford 4 cyl. Boost 20 or 30 psi maybe? Known to eat head gaskets, but otherwise a pretty solid engine. I really dont know that *I* personally will ever push this engine hard enough to blow head gaskets, but I figure its better safe than sorry and i am thinking/hoping that copper gaskets and o-rings would make it more reliable.

Rebuild is about to start on the RB26. Most engine builders that I have spoken to recommend copper O-ringing of the block in combination with the standard Nissan head gasket. One shop recommends against this, however, and to simply use a metal head gasket. I expect to be running in the region of 1.5 to 2 bar of boost.

The use of o-rings is highly recommended to seal combustion pressure, most notably when there are only 4 head bolts per cylinder. O-ring grooves can be cut into the block or cylinder head. The proper dimensions for .041 stainless wire are: .040 groove width; .030 to .032 groove depth.
